Jan income from food, beverages industry up

SA's food and beverages industry generated a total income of R2.9 billion year on year (y/y) in January, representing a 3.7% rise on the R2.7 billion recording in the previous reporting period, according to data released by Statistics SA on Monday, 28 March 2011.

The main contributor to the increase was food sales, which posted a 5.8% increase and contributed five percentage points, Stats SA said.

Other contributors included takeaway and fast-food outlets, together recording a 7.3% increase and contributing two percentage points.

Restaurants and coffee shops registered 2.8%, contributing 1.5 percentage points, while caterers posted 11% rise and contributed 1.5 percentage points.

The total income generated by the food and beverages industry for the three months ended January increased by 8.2% compared with the three months ended January 2010.

The main contributor to this increase was food sales at - 8.3%, contributing 7.3 percentage points.
