Flatbread that rises to the occasion

Since its traditional origins in 1054 flatbreads have had a special place at the family table. Pillsbury Bakeries and Foodservice division has announced the latest release to its range of quality products - Pillsbury flatbread inspired by the Italian Schiacciata bread is crafted for taste, texture and versatility.
Flatbread that rises to the occasion

An Italian flatbread, similar to focaccia that is often referred to as a Tuscan flatbread. It is prepared with a bread flour dough that is shaped into rounds or rectangles. The surface is dimpled and is usually brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with coarse salt and rosemary and then baked for a short period of time. Schiacciata is often topped with a variety of ingredients including thin slices of prosciutto, various herbs, onions, peppers and grated cheese. (Resourced from Recipetips.com)

More people of all age groups, status and ethnic groups are opting for healthier meals and are slowly steering away from traditional starchy foods, hence the rise of flatbreads becoming a more favourable option. "Often people opt for meal sharing, for example tear and share breads, which fit the flatbread profile," says brand manager, Leigh Mervitz.

"Making Pillsbury your own is evident in our focus on convenience, our markets' primary need, that's why we released this versatile flatbread which is quick and easy to prepare,", she says.

Mervitz says to make your favourite canapés, tramezzinis, pizza sandwiches, garlic bread, braai broodjies and focaccia, simply remove from the packaging and pop your frozen par-baked Pillsbury flatbread into the oven to bake. There is no need to thaw; and cooking time ranges from 3 to 12 minutes, oven dependent. "But the golden crust and 'eat me' aroma are a constant. Cut into bruschetta, bread sticks, croutons, grilled dipping squares or any other delight and serve your patrons," she says.

Pillsbury flatbread is also Halaal certified and comes in boxes of 18.
