Marci Pather All Joy Foods CEO says "We are proud to provide consumers with lower sodium tomato sauce with the great taste that South Africans enjoy. This reduction in sodium will make our Gourmet Tomato Sauce the lowest-sodium content in tomato sauce, produced locally in South Africa.

To help in the effort to reduce consumers' salt, i.e. sodium, intake, All Joy's Gourmet tomato sauce will have reduced sodium by 40% in its sauce beginning this spring.

Sodium helps maintain the balance of fluids in our bodies, it helps transmit nerve impulses and it also influences muscle contractions and by and large, the kidney functions to control sodium. If, for some reason, the kidneys aren't working properly, however, or if we ingest too much salt, sodium begins to accumulate in the blood. Because sodium attracts and holds water, blood volume increases and, with it, so does blood pressure. It is this increase in blood pressure that makes sodium so dangerous, being a risk factor for heart disease www.askmen.com/sports/foodcourt_200/242_eating_well.html and stroke www.askmen.com/sports/health_60/88_mens_health.html, which are some of the leading killers in the South Africa.

Hence, keeping your sodium intake within reasonable limits makes a lot of sense.
