Ackerman earns honorary doctorate

In his acceptance speech at the University, Ackerman commented on his award: “It is an honour which not only brings me much pride, but one which compels me to reflect on the fact that I have lived through an extraordinary epoch during which I have been privileged to observe at close quarters not only the development of a great commercial undertaking, but the revolutionary transformation of a society which only 20 years ago seemed doomed to a permanent state of isolation, decline and impoverishment.”

He continued: “That I have been able to play some small role in nudging my country towards economic freedom and social equity is less a reflection on me than it is an indication of the powerful part business can play in influencing state policy for the better - that a society in which the basic needs of all citizens are met is one in which entrepreneurs thrive.”
