Strategically located between Brackenfell, Kuils River and Stellenbosch, Blackheath Industria is a prime job creation area for Mfuleni, Blue Downs and Happy Valley.
"As a key industrial hub, it already hosts manufacturing giants such as Allens Meshco, Cape Concrete, Continental China and Columbia DBL," said Councillor Pieter van Dalen, the local Ward Councillor.
"Commercial and industrial growth in the northern suburbs is expanding at a rapid pace with new developments occurring all along this belt in the direction of Somerset West.
"This not only creates jobs for informal settlements such as Happy Valley - where the unemployment rate is close to 40% - but helps to expand markets, especially in the housing and construction sectors," said Cllr van Dalen.
The new shopping centre on the corner of the Stellenbosch Arterial/Polkadraai Road and Van Riebeeck Road, will also provide a commercial link to the Stellenbosch Wine Route.
According to Van Dalen, the City is partnering with the Blackheath City Improvement District (CID) in several community projects such as establishing a creche, feeding schemes, job creation initiatives and crime prevention programmes.
The Blackheath CID is also compiling a local business directory for the 542 businesses in the area to promote networking and encourage the sourcing of products locally.
"This will help curb the impact of rising transport costs and ease traffic flows along major routes," said Brendan van der Merwe, Blackheath CID manager.
A total of 246 businesses have already registered interest in the directory that will lead to an online database. Members would be able to screen access to their database profiles to avoid spam.
"The City of Cape Town heartily supports the business directory, which is being provided free of charge by the Blackheath CID.
“This initiative is bound to succeed and can easily be replicated by the 15 other registered CIDs in the Western Cape," said Van Dalen.
