SAS helps Leratong children reach greater heights

200 treasured little girls and boys under the age of 6 from the Leratong Preschool were treated to a day out at Monte Casino Bird Gardens by the staff at SAS Institute on Friday.

As part of their corporate social investment programme SAS has been sponsoring the Leratong preschool for more than 8 years. Leratong operates in the Alexandra area and provides one meal a day, clothes and education to more than 200 children many of whom are HIV positive, as well as providing a home to many of the orphaned children in the area.

The operation is the home and brainchild of Peggy Chauke a social worker and the founder of Leratong, who is joined by her team of 12 dedicated teachers and child minders.

“It is such a privilege for SAS to be able to sponsor Leratong and to have a day of fun to share with these very special children,” says Elizabeth Croeser HR manager at SAS.

The day was filled with fun and excitement as the children were treated to a walk through the bird gardens as well as the interactive bird show put on by the Monte Casino bird park team. After lunch the children were given gift packets with teddy bears and some treats to take home.

“It takes a very special person to run a preschool like Leratong and dedicate your life to the joy and heartache that comes with such a responsibility. Many of the children in Peggy's care are HIV positive, and it was a heart warming experience to have been able to brighten their day a little,” adds Croeser.

Facing the AIDS pandemic South Africa is in dire need of homes and means to care for orphans and provide support for child headed families. While Peggy herself admits that Leratong is but a drop in the ocean, it is a single drop that means the world to the 200 children she cares for.
