Noncommunicable diseases News South Africa

'Tap-Tapping' into life-saving information

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) recently released its SunSmart audio CD aimed at children, parents and teachers. The CD contains 10 one-minute radio spots and covers the main themes of sun awareness and skin cancer - vital information for the December to January break.

These SunSmart messages are delivered by CANSA's official messenger, Tap-Tap or Toktokkie, in a humorous and fun way that will be remembered by young children and adults alike. Tap-Tap broadcasts his message from the `Ultraviolet Headquarters' where the CD's other two characters, UVA and UVB, are up to no-good. UVA and UVB's voices are masterly done by talented Liz Meiring and Lochner de Kock and guarantees to liven up any room with a couple of giggles.

Topics include tips on how to avoid getting sun-burned, and what to look out for when buying sun care products. It provides education on the very real dangers of the African sun, UV penetration through clouds, the dangers of reflective surfaces like cement and sand, as well as the taboos of sun-tanning.

The educational CD is available in English and Afrikaans. Download the radio spots as a zip file (11MB) to listen to it.

For more info on how to help fight skin cancer and play safe in the sun, call CANSA toll-free on 0800 22 66 22 or go to www.cansa.org.za.
