SA journo joins Al Jazeera

South African broadcast journalist Kalay Maistry has been appointed southern Africa correspondent for Al Jazeera International, the new 24-hour English-language news and current affairs channel based in Johannesburg.

Maistry worked as senior reporter at SABC and eTV and has extensive experience in political reporting. She has covered southern Africa in the field, on the news-desk, and in bulletins, current affairs shows and special live broadcasts. Prior to her TV career, Kalay reported for Radio 702, Capital Radio, and Radio France International.

"I am pleased that Kalay Maistry has joined our news team as our Southern African correspondent. It was important to bring on board a journalist who really understands the region and who will be able to contribute to our mission of offering English speaking viewers across the world a fresh 360 degree view of world events," Commented Director of News Steve Clark.

"We will bring viewers all sides of the story from all parts of the world. The developing world is extremely important to us and we intend to dig deeper to show stories from Africa that have not previously been covered," he added.

Al Jazeera International, the first English language news channel to be headquartered in the Middle East, will launch in 2006. It has broadcasting centres Doha, Kuala Lumpur, London and Washington.
