FXI launches online archive of public broadcasting in South Africa

The Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) has launched an online archive of the history of public broadcasting in post-apartheid South Africa.

The online archive gives governments, journalists and activists around the world instant access to information on transforming a state-run broadcaster into a diverse, independent and publicly owned media outlet.

The archive includes documents on the transformation in 1993 of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) into a public broadcaster and the process that led to the creation of the SABC's first independent board.

The archive also traces the work of the Campaign for Open Media (COM), a coalition of 37 organisations that monitored the media in the run-up to the 1994 elections and lobbied for the SABC's creation. COM also fought for the creation of South Africa's first independent broadcast regulator, the Independent Broadcasting Authority's (IBA).

The archive is available online at www.fxi.org.za/whats.htm

It is also available in hard copy format. Write to: FXI, 5th floor, Argon House, 87 Juta Street, Braamfontein, 2017, South Africa; Tel: +27-11-403-8403; Fax: +27-11-403-8309; E-mail: .
