ICASA faces possible CWU strike over pay dispute

The Communication Workers' Union (CWU) says its members might go on strike if their dispute with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) over pay increases and benefits is not resolved soon.

The CWU is demanding an 11.5% increase for the lowest paid employees and 10.8% for the highest paid, a housing subsidy of R1 100, a once-off payment of R900 to those on the ceiling of their range and a R450 across-the-board once-off payment.

Mawetu Sizatu, the CWU's National Broadcasting and Allied Sector co-ordinator, says that ICASA has offered a 9% increase, but has desregarded the other demands. He says that they will either go to arbitration or take to the streets. The CWU will report back to the workers after first consulting with lawyers.
