Abraham Kriel commemorates World AIDS Day

Abraham Kriel Childcare commemorated World AIDS Day on 1 December 2010, together with the rest of the world, to create awareness around the infection and to remember those who have lost their lives. The event was held at the New Hope Community Church in the Soweto community of Zola, where the Abraham Kriel Home-based Care Programme's offices are also located.

The event was opened with powerful songs from a group of community care volunteers, whereafter Chrissie Coetzee, manager: community services, gave an address in which she thanked Steinhoff International, which provides funding for the programme.

She also thanked the community for their efforts in working together with the programme, to assist children affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, as well as the staff for all their efforts.

Guest speakers

Guest speakers included a LoveLife youth motivational speaker, one of the caregivers from the Community Care Programme and Thembi Dlamini, a community member who recited a poem about how HIV/AIDS has affected her and the people around her.

A sermon was also presented by the pastor of the church, before a moment of silence was observed with lit candles, to remember those who passed away as a result of HIV/AID- related illnesses.

It is estimated that 5.6 million people live with HIV/AIDS in South Africa and it is reported that 310 000 people died of the disease in 2009. This leaves many children with ill or terminal parents, or heading families and supporting younger siblings.
