Design Indaba pulls architectural superstar

One of the world's most exciting and controversial architects, Rem Koolhaas, has accepted an invitation to speak at the 7th International Design Indaba later this month. Koolhaas, a former journalist and script writer, is responsible for some of the world's most startling and original buildings.

These include the new Public Library in Seattle, described by one commentator as "a building that glories in its strangeness".

His biggest work is the CCTV building in Beijing, which will be completed in 2008. Although the building is 230 metres tall it is not a traditional tower, but a rectangular loop of horizontal and vertical sections.

Many of his building seem to defy the possible, and he works closely with one of the great structural engineers of modern times, Cecil Balmond of Arup, to realise his visions.

Koolhaas studied architecture at the Architectural Association School in London. In 1975, in partnership with Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and Madelon Vriesendrop, he founded the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in Rotterdam.

His approach to architecture is as much about ideas as it is about buildings. Sociology, and philosophy are as central to his work as form and structure. Although considered a deconstructivist, he has always tempered the severity of this school with humanity and compassion.

He is much in demand as a speaker, and is received by fans with the adulation normally reserved for rock-star.

Koolhaas has won awards around the world, including this year's Royal Gold Medal, Britain's most prestigious architecture prize. The award citation singles out his success in repositioning architecture "as a discipline that is intrinsically connected to contemporary culture".

"Rem Koolhaas' projects have been constructing new ways through which architecture can engage with the contemporary city and the cultural context in which it operates. Each project by Rem Koolhaas is unique and unequivocally grown out of its setting. In doing so, Rem Koolhaas' projects constantly surprise and broaden our aesthetic references."

Koolhaas will participate in the Architectural Indaba Workshop on Thursday, February 26 from 15.15 to 17.15 and will speak at the plenary session immediately afterwards, from 17.15 to 18.15.

The Design Indaba Conference runs from the 25 to the 27 February at the Cape Town International Conference Centre.
