Kano spends N4bn on IT Park project

Kano States Information Technology Park will be ready for use in the few months after the completion of the building to house the project.

HANA's correspondent was told on Monday that the state had invested about N4bn into the construction of the building, while work on the entire park had also reached advanced stages.

The state has already started inviting local technology to take up space in newly completed building with all the facilities.

In an interview with HANA, the Special Adviser to the governor on Education and Information Technology, Alhaji Bashir Galandanci, said, the cost of the building was only part of the investment the state had made into actualising its IT Park dream.

He said, "It is difficult to quantify how much the government has spent on this project. But it has spent N3-N4bn on the building, which is the main expense the government has made."

Construction work on the building started some 20 years ago for a different project but had to be redesigned after for an Information Technology Park was first mooted.

On plans by the government to make the project viable, Galadanci said the state had taken into consideration similar projects like the Abuja Technology Village and that the government had learned from these projects while fashioning out its own scheme. Only last week Galadanci was in Lagos to make a presentation on the project to chief executives of IT firms.

He explained that the project had been designed to focus on the growth of the local IT industry and that the government was ready to have a stake in any firm that established its presence in the park.

He said the government would establish a policy whereby priority for the implementation of its IT services would be given to firms located in the park.

According to Galadanci, plans to tackle power problems had already been completed with the installation of six generators on the site located at Ibrahim Taiwo Road, in the state capital. He said the government was also in discussions with the Power Holding Company of Nigeria to build a dedicated power transmission system at the location.

Besides Kano, a few other IT park projects are under consideration in Abuja, the Abuja Technology Village and another IT park project in Akwa Ibom State in the southern part of the country.
