The Plastics' Shark - FTW

Remember that band that won the Red Bull Radar competition at Rocking the Daisies 2008? Well, they've finally dropped their debut album. The Plastics recently released Shark at the official Cape Town launch gig which took place at the always popular Assembly.

After listening to the album on repeat for about two weeks in my car (it refuses to read on any PC I've tried at the office), I'm still loving it.

Dynamism and craftsmanship

The Plastics live and The Plastics recorded are vastly different - I think they've managed to pull off the latter much more effectively with a lot more dynamism and craftsmanship than the former. But perhaps their successful attempt at producing a great album had something to do with a little help from internationally-renowned US-based producer, Gordon Raphael, working with the foursome on Shark.

The album is rich in body and soul with the husky vocals of Pascal Righini breathing life into every track. It's a sharply produced and engineered album that shows no teething issues of a first attempt. There are so many hits on this album it's difficult to choose a favourite track, but here's a few I sing along to like I'm auditioning for the sixth season of Idols while hitting the long road to and from work.

Musical art

Jukebox, the opening track on the album, is the hook track. The catchy chorus grips you from the second listen and it gives you a feel of what the rest of the album has to offer. The additional strings gives this track something special, as the layered vocals of Pascal are complimented by violins, a viola, cello and piano. Jukebox really is a considered piece of musical art.

Lookout, is an upbeat track I always enjoy. It's a combination of the tempo, vocal range, chorus and lyrics that make it one of the catchiest songs on the album. Every track on the album provides you with some new element, yet they all stay true to the album as a whole. One can actually feel the passion coming through in the track Midnight Passion.

The central themes across the length of the album, of love, lust and relationships, are explored upon a highly enjoyable undulating musical landscape.

Shark is definitely FTW.
