The Big Issue leads the way as street papers say no to war

Who says you can't make a difference? The South African branch of The Big Issue magazine has successfully lobbied for an global anti-war message to be used on the front cover of street papers and magazines throughout the world.

The stark graphic cover, designed by capetonian, James Garner, depicts a single black line through a blood-red tank. A picture has the power of thousand words and this one will communicate to the readers of over 40 street publications drawn from 22 countries world-wide.

"The Big Issue, like many other united fronts throughout the world, felt powerless to avert the looming war. Instead of sitting back we decided to use our platform in the social responsibility media as an opportunity to regain power and send a clear message to the world - NO WAR!" this according to Managing Director of The Big Issue South Africa, Shane Halpin.

The publications are all part of the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), an organisation whose influence is not to be taken lightly as collectively they sell nearly 30 million copies annually. Operating with very limited resources and a determination to bring about real change, the INSP provide a simple but effective means of employment for thousands of homeless and socially excluded people. The Big Issue is determined to make a difference in lives of people around the world.
