CLEVELAND, OHIO: Even though I'm on the other side of the world at present at the headquarters of the Trade, Association and Business Publications International (TABPI) in the States, I couldn't help but follow my team's Loerie coverage on the ground in Margate over this weekend and the usual associated industry shenanigans and excitement of the awards winners. Sorry if you're still untangling the red streamers from your statuettes and picking the white confetti out your teeth and other dubious places, but woohoo - well done to the Biz marketing team for a simple, but very effective brand activation - hey, we got Loeries covered! Look out for our special Loeries newsletter later today. And of course, congrats to all the worthy Loerie winners, may your hangovers be short! I spent a few days in Kansas City, Missouri, last week at the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) annual conference in a dialogue on the challenges facing business-to-business editors here and it was awesome to get a global perspective on the issues common to all of us, such as defending editorial integrity, expert and credible content, defending our industry niche, and the imperative of expert industry editors to assert their rights in a media world where mass content bastardises B2B media brands. I'll be reporting back on the most pertinent points for our industry over the next few weeks on Bizcommunity.com and offline at TABPI SA Editor's Chapter talk shops.

See y'all! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com. All marketing news to: marketingnews@bizcommunity.com. Responses to this column welcomed in our new online editor's column archive or on our blog: http://blog.bizcommunity.com.

Today's headlines

The Loerie Awards 200826 & 27 July 2008
Net#work BBDO, Gloo take first Loeries Digital Grand Prix
On Sunday, 27 July 2008 at the 30th anniversary of the Loerie Awards in Margate, a total of 112 Loeries were handed out, of which only two were Grands Prix: King James in TV & Cinema Commercials for Alan Gray ‘Beautiful', and Net#work BBDO and Gloo Digital Design in Experiential Digital Mixed-Media Campaign for ‘Youngblood5 - the first Grand Prix in the Digital Category.

Saturday night Loeries winners
A total of 172 Loeries were handed out at the Saturday night ceremony, 26 July 2008, of the 30th annual Loerie awards, two of which were Grands Prix - Am I Collective and Trigger Communication - and 15 of which were Gold. Also introduced this year was the Creative Achievement Award, awarded to Mike Schalit, chief creative officer of BBDO South Africa.

Glendinning scoops Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award
Mike Glendinning, sales and marketing director at Volkswagen, Audi and Seat, was honoured with the 2008 Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award on Saturday night, 26 July 2008, at the 30th annual Loeries advertising festival weekend in Margate. The award was introduced last year.

Look out for our special Loeries newsletter
So much happened at this year's 30th anniversary of The Loerie Awards, we've decided once again to put out a special edition newsletter, so keep your eyeballs peeled for it. In the meantime, don't forget to check out our Loeries special section which gathers together all our coverage, from editorial and blogs to polls, galleries and forums.

Net#work, Apple withdraw Loeries entries
Apple and its agency Net#work BBDO withdrew three entries from this year's Loerie Awards at the last minute before the festival weekend began, unaware that these three finalists had in fact all won Bronze. This affects the embargoed lists and releases issued to print media before the festival weekend and has reduced Net#work BBDO's total tally of Bronze Loeries to 12 from 15. Net#work's overall position in the Creativity Points table does not change, although its points are down by 150 to 2350.

Digital marketing: Doing the homework - digiVOX
[Andrea Mitchell] Digital marketing today, means a very different thing to what it did ten years ago. Ten years ago, it simply meant placing a banner on a web site. Some banners didn't even click through to a web site, as advertisers often didn't have a web presence. Media owners even charged a “loading fee”. Knowing how many times it had been viewed, let alone any more data beyond that, was not even considered.

Ten truths for B2B journalists
[Louise Marsland] KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI: Business-to-business editors are facing similar issues globally: the relentless pull towards digital editions, fear of print products being cannibalised by online brands, squeezed revenues, shrinking newsrooms and an increasing fight to assert the rights of editorial expertise versus mass content aggregation online.
