Today, Monday, 15 March 2010 sees the launch of the 2010 Loeries campaign, and it promises - tongue-in-cheek - to be the biggest event of the year. As Herman Manson writes, “Before those FIFA lawyers get their knickers in a knot again - Kulula-style - no part of the campaign actually ever mentions the FIFA World Cup or shows a football. It's called having a sense of humour.”

Saturday 13 March saw the launch of the Professional Journalists' Association (ProJourn), which aims to give working journalists (is there any other kind?) a voice. The Gautrain also hosted a highly successful #tweetuponrails tweetup, and excited Twitterers were treated to a spontaneous test trip on the tracks. Then, in the evening, South African Tourism hosted a braai to celebrate the inaugural flight of V Australia from Oz to Jozi.

Last week, a contingent of South Africans landed in Austin, Texas, and have been tweeting up a storm ever since at the annual SXSW (South by South West) festival for the convergence of emerging technologies, original music and independent films. By all accounts, Eve Dmochowska's Saturday panel on her brand new www.crowdfunding.co.za project - which since accidental launch on Thursday 4 March has raised R795 000 already in individual pledges towards a single angel fund for South African start-ups - has been wowing the world. View our SXSW twitterfall to see what our Saffers are up to in the US!

Also last week Thursday 11 March saw the launch of the new world-class Stark Studios in Fontainebleu, Johannesburg, the new home for the production of Afrikaans soapie Binneland Sub Judice. In April Binnelanders is going from half-hour to one-hour slots five days a week, and a legal storyline is being incorporated into the hospital theme. All filming is done in HD. Highly impressive and huge in so many ways.

Win a copy of Sid Peimer's new book - find the word
To win one of three copies of Sid Peimer's new book, The Clear Win, which deals with the ins and outs of pitching to clients, all you have to do is find the one word that he reckons is the be-all and end-all when it comes to pitching for the account and winning it. A regular Bizcommunity.com contributor, Peimer calls it his one word speech! To help you find the word, we're given you the table of contents, introduction and first two chapters of the book - so all you need do is pick the right word out of about 2000 or so. Come on, give it a go. It's a doddle. For more details of 2010's most interesting (and shortest) competition, go to www.bizcommunity.com/TheClearWin-Competition.html.

[ICOM] What the heck is ICOM and why is it important for SA's digital progress?
[Josh Adler] Well, it’s arrived. I'm sitting in the lounge about to fly off to Portugal for the I-COM summit (International Conference on Online Media Measurement), an event that takes place every two years and seems to attract everyone who's anyone in the world of "Internet audience measurement". A hefty term, and the easiest way to dumb it down is to say that we're here to try and better understand the best ways to measure what on earth goes on with visitor activity to the ever-changing world of web, mobile and social media. Being a celeb doesn’t mean you can break the rules
[Marion Scher] If you mention the name Lance Armstrong this week in South Africa, you’ll be met with mixed reactions. Talk shows are talking and twitterers tweeting. You need at least two blank pages for stamping and you’d think Armstrong, being a world traveller, would know that. Read more >>

[ICOM] The I-COM Summit gets down to business...
[Josh Adler] I'd hoped to blog throughout the proceedings, but while I find the idea of documenting and tweeting stuff in real time novel and webby, you cannot escape the fact that conferences are about person-to-person networking in the real-world! Powerful plays open the Ikhwezi Theatre Festival   THEATRE
[Michael Britton] Since 1998, the Baxter Theatre Centre has been running Ikhwezi, a cultural outreach festival. This year, the festival presents 12 new plays, and if the two plays showcased on opening night are anything to go by, it promises to be well worth getting along to see a few shows. With a host of new acting talent on display, and featuring the work of new playwrights, it's hats off to the Baxter for their efforts in bringing community players to mainstream theatres.

Paul Snodgrass is so lonely   THEATRE
[Ruth Cooper] I think the Baxter main concert arena might be my new favourite place to hear bands, not surprisingly they have really great acoustics and hearing Taxi Violence belt it out as opener to Paul Snodgrass comedy routine was a great pleasure. After an electrifying performance of Jim's Revenge and Devil n' Pistol, Mr Snodgrass took to the stage and growled out an intense number, which basically consisted of him repeating I'm so lonely like a coked up and angry Axel Rose.

Sinnfully delicious   FOOD
[Riccardo Spagni] Restaurant reviews are a tricky trade. It's impossible not to arrange a review in advance unless you are some ridiculously famous reviewer, which I am not. At the same time, restaurants have a tendency to bring their "A game" when a reviewer is in the building. By an incredible stroke of fortune, however, my dinner at Sinns went unnoticed until the end. The manager and staff had no idea which person in the restaurant was the reviewer until long after I'd eaten and drank to my heart's content. The upshot is that this may be the most unbiased review I've written for a while.

Bullock wins Oscar for role in The Blind Side   MOVIES
[Zeenat Ebrahim] Sandra Bullock won the award for Best Actress at the 82nd annual Academy Awards for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy in The Blind Side. I loved her performance in this movie, with her tough as nails act but maternal character as Mrs Tuohy. She came up against actor Meryl Streep amongst others for this award and looks like she's outdone them all.

Van Coke Kartel - Skop Skiet en Donner   MUSIC
[Ruth Cooper] Van Coke Kartel's latest album Skop Skiet en Donner is excellent music to listen to while house cleaning, high praise indeed, house cleaning being just above listening to while driving, which this album also receives high points for. Though perhaps listening to while at work is probably not ideal as the album is complex enough for you to really want to give a fair amount of attention to it which works perfectly well for those more mindless tasks like driving and house cleaning.
