A period piece

So what's in a name? If postings on a wide range of sites around the world are anything to go by, it's all in the name - and that means quite a bit... Apple's naming of its new product the iPad has gotten everyone talking and punning. Usually we can rely on the automotive industry to come up with names that land up on the proverbial scrapheap because they don't translate well - Ford's Cortina translates as ‘jalopy' in some countries and the Ford Fiera didn't go down too well in certain Latin-American countries, where "fiera" means "ugly old woman”. Rolls even got it wrong in Germany with the Silver Mist, where ‘mist' means manure. Apple's effort could either be a debacle or, if the aim is to get your product talked about, a marketing coup. Here are just some of the links that have some grinning, some gasping, and some groaning (and griping, naturally):And, on a completely different note, is it just us or are Januaries normally so chock-a-block with various industry awards calls to enter, deadline reminders, deadline extensions and jury announcements? One that particularly caught our eye late last week was the Cannes Lions 2010 call to enter, with its announcement of various new awards and categories - Grand Prix for Good, anyone?

iPad. iPeed. iPod.

True Italian Style at Massimo's Pizza Club   FOOD
[Riccardo Spagni] I'm generally reasonably fussy when it comes to my food. Don't get me wrong, I'll eat anything as long as it isn't smoked chicken (don't ask). But whilst I find most restaurants and the vast majority of meals passable, I occasionally stumble across a place that blows me away. Massimo's Pizza Club is, by a mile, one of those restaurants. It was started by Massimo and Tracy Orione after they moved to Cape Town; she being British and he, obviously, Italian. It is not a run-of-the-mill pizzeria, and it is so far removed from Debonairs and its ilk that you can never imagine eating any other pizza again. What makes Massimo's so good? Well, in order for me to even begin explaining that to you, let us discuss what makes any restaurant amazing.

Jack Parow is cooler as almal   MUSIC
[Ruth Cooper] Jack Parow has a good marketing scheme in releasing his limited-edition EP in the form of a tasty “cold and dripping” ice cream flash drive with a collection of 10 tracks and six videos. He seems to be firmly cementing his cult status. You know you're doing something right when the general public are proclaiming and updating their facebook status' as “jy dink jy's cooler as ekke“ and quoting lines from the song.

Dax Martin presents sleek sleepwear at Fashion Week   FASHION
[Ilva Pieterse] Southern Sun played host to excited industry attendees during Audi Joburg Fashion Week (Autumn/Winter) at Sandton Convention Centre, 21 January 2010, by showcasing lingerie by Dax Martin.

A roaring tale of bravado   MOVIES
[Zeenat Ebrahim] White Lion is a remarkable and interesting watch with a third person narrative. The adventure film begins around a campfire where a story-teller reveals the tale of the White Lion legend that marks the Shangaan belief, to a group of school campers.
