A bad, sad weekend It's bad, and sad, when a respected publication closes, and this weekend saw the last issue of BDFM's The Weekender, which had a lifespan of less than four years and became the latest victim of the recession. It was the end of the road for The Weekender as a result of falling ad revenues, distribution and printing issues. General sentiment seems to be in agreement with the tweet on Saturday, 7 November 2009, that went: “Bought both the Saturday Star and The Weekender today. The wrong paper is biting the dust.” Bizcommunity.com trusts that job loss will be kept to an utmost minimum. On a more cheerful note, public voting for The Bookmarks' Greatest Individual Contribution to Online Media and Marketing award, sponsored by The Spacestation, is now open until the end of tomorrow, Tuesday 10 November. Do Do Do shot in Durban MUSIC [Sindy Peters] Durban-based indie pop-rock band Fire through the Window recently released the video to the track Do Do Do, taken off their latest album, "Hey". It's a fun, youthful video shot with still cameras at a high frame rate, producing an animated effect that links well with the track conceptually. SA's Via Katlehong pantsula's across the world THEATRE [Sindy Peters] South African dance company, Via Katlehong has wowed audiences far and wide from New York to Germany to Spain. The group has been touring the world for the past 16 years increasing their fan base as they go along. Gumboot, jazz, traditional, hip hop to pantsula - these energetic dancers have come a long way from 1992, when the group was formed. An African adaption of The Nutcracker delights THEATRE [Ruth Cooper] Yes the festive spirits are in the air, and if you are like me and can't quite believe how close the end of the year is looming, and are still startled by seeing Christmas decorations popping up everywhere, will be pleased or dismayed to know (depending on your point of view) that festive times are most definitely just around the corner and soon the Little Drummer Boy will be assaulting your ears at a Pick n' Pay near you. I was pleasantly brought round to this fact last Wednesday night by attending the wonderful Mzanzi Production of The Nutcracker at the Baxter. This talented company has created an innovative South African-inspired ballet adaption of the much loved festive classic. Haezer the sick dirty genius MUSIC [Marcello-Calvin Adams] Have you ever come across a dude that's a genius born for legendary status? Well I have and he gave me the most awesome insight into enjoying life that I've had so far. I bet he didn't even know it. Zebra & Giraffe back The Killers MUSIC Rock act Zebra & Giraffe will be The Killers' support act on their SA tour, commencing with two nights at the Coca-Cola Dome in Joburg (Thursday, 3 December and Friday, 4 December 2009) and then goes to Cape Town for a performance on Sunday, 6 December at Val De Vie Wine and Polo Estate, in the Paarl/Franschhoek Valley. Golden Arrows the champs SOCCER Newly crowned MTN8 champions Lamontville Golden Arrows received a heroes' welcome in Durban on Monday, a week after winning the coveted trophy and R8 million in prize money. Fourie du Preez wins Sport24's Performance of the Month Award RUGBY Fourie du Preez, who was Sport24's choice for player of the Tri-Nations, has won the Sport24 Performance of the Month for September 2009. Competition for the less-coveted Plonker of the Month was, however, tighter. Three SA shows in new Kelly Clarkson world tour MUSIC Pop superstar Kelly Clarkson is making three local appearances in her new All I Ever Wanted world tour. The SA performances are: Friday, 12 March at the Coca-Cola Dome in Joburg; Sunday, 14 March at the ICC Durban Arena; and Wednesday, 17 March 2010 at Cape Town's Grand Arena, GrandWest. jacSharp's Technicolour MUSIC Indie record label, Seed (Sheer Sound) and acoustic-electro pop/rock band, jacSharp have re-released the album, “Technicolour”, which is the band's debut album. New benchmark for Romeo and Juliet THEATRE [Debbie Hathway] As a film and theatre lover, I can be as skeptical as the next person when it comes to critics' reviews. They represent individual opinions, educated or otherwise, and at the end of the day, people should make up their own minds. So in the preparation for my interview with Dada Masilo earlier this year, I was surprised to see how many rave reviews she had received for her contemporary version of Romeo and Juliet, the product of her 2008 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance, which premiered at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

"It is not a matter of what is true that counts, but a matter of what is perceived to be true." - Henry Kissinger "Here is the basic rule for winning success. Let's mark it in the mind and remember it. The rule is: Success depends on the support of other people. The only hurdle between you and what you want to be in is the support of other people." - David J. Schwartz "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." - Jim Ryun "The toughest thing about success is that you've got to keep on being a success." - Irving Berlin "The entrepreneur is essentially a visualiser and an actualiser... He can visualise something, and when he visualises it he sees exactly how to make it happen." - Robert L. Schwartz More...  Submit a Quote Print - Print any item in this newsletter. | The following companies have opened press offices on Bizcommunity.com!As South African and global markets become increasingly competitive, businesses wishing to grow are increasingly forced to improve products and differentiate themselves from a host of competitors. In order to maintain any competitive edge, a business must protect its innovations. At the same time, others are also seeking to protect their own innovations, and the business must accordingly also guard itself against the claims of others.
