What a weekend

The Mother City came to the party this weekend for what many reckon must have been the best Loerie Awards ever. Not even Cape Town's notoriously unpredictable weather could dampen spirits - even if a downpour did exactly that to a hairdo or two.

What came across clearly was the wealth of talent and creativity that we enjoy in South Africa - even the ‘losers' could hold their heads up high. Well done to all who submitted entries, and to those who didn't - do so next year. Even if you're not among the winners, you will - based on this experience - have a party you'll never forget. The Bizcommunity.com team is now in recovery stage after one of their most hectic weekends and hopes to be back on even keel by the end of the week.

[Loeries 2009] Velocity keeps Loeries burning at Ignite   OTHER
[Evan-Lee Courie] So you think you can party, dance and drink? If you think you can, then the Velocity Party was the place to be on Friday, 25 September 2009. Themed “Party like a rock star”, the shindig was held at Ignite in Camps Bay as one of many parties at the Loerie Awards 2009.

[Loeries 2009] Swimming down Long Street with Goldfish   MUSIC
[Ruth Cooper] The official Saturday night Loeries after-party down Long Street was all but drowned out; the heavens opened up and the Loerie party-goers ran for cover to celebrate at the Long Street Cafe tent. Heaters, dancing and good spirits (both the good will and the alcoholic kind) kept things nice and toasty and the atmosphere didn't seem to be too dampened at all.

[Loeries 2009] Red Huxley triumph at the Loeries 2009 Battle of the Bands   MUSIC
[Ruth Cooper] Assembly, ever popular with the creative types, hosted the 31st Annual Loerie Awards Agency Battle of the Bands competition last night, 24 September 2009. Being accustomed to gigs always starting at least an hour or so later than advertised in chilled out Cape Town, we arrived just after nine and unfortunately missed three of the five bands that were playing. However we did manage to catch winners and overall biggest ego'ed band the Red Huxleys from Ogilvy and their closest rivals of the night The Gloonies from Gloo.

Mother to Mother speaks to mothers and fathers   THEATRE
[Daphne Cooper] Sindiwe Magona's one-hander Mother to Mother is the story of Nontuthuzela Manqina, the mother of the young man who was one of the mob who killed Amy Biehl. Magona wrote the novel Mother to Mother and together with Janice Honeyman (director) and Thembi Mtshali-Jones (starring actor) has adapted the novel for stage.

Make it burn   ART
[Terry Levin] Leaving behind our urban constructs to participate in this year's Afrikaburns "Invent", held in the Tankwa Karoo National Park from 9 - 13 September, to live in a tent without access to any urban conveniences whatsoever, calls to mind a way of life at once ancient and tribal and also discomfortingly contemporary - a reminder of the millions in our midst without any of the benefits of the urban comforts many take for granted.
