Thanks for the feedback - Freelancers: here's how to get paid
Tiffany and I had so much fun writing this piece - it's great to get good feedback and see that people enjoyed it :-)

A quick suggestion for Festus - have a look at the portfolios on Freelancentral and also our FAQs section. You'll see what other freelancers are charging (hourly rates) and we do have a ballpark ratecard in the FAQs. How you apply your hourly rate is, as Rob says, an art :-)

Definitely also find yourself a good bookkeeper and an accountant who knows what's what. You can not only save on tax but it's also a great feeling to know you're 100% compliant with SARS.Posted on 22 Mar 2010 14:34

Wonderful Insights - Freelancers: here's how to get paid
Thank you Tiffany and Jo for this very informative follow-up article! I enjoyed getting two different professional perspectives on the payment issue, both very realistic and balanced - and I completely agree with Jo in that, 'If you go for a massage or buy something in a shop, you pay for it immediately, so why should this be any different?'

The advice offered also confirmed for me that, especially as a freelancer, it is vital to put into place a fair value on our services - both financial and in terms of mutually fair work/payment structures - and then politely but firmly 'stick to one's guns'. It may sometimes mean losing a client or two (and them losing out on your fantastic service!), but the long-term gains are healthy cash-flow, work satisfaction and ultimately mutually respectful working relationships with that stable of 'new, lovely clients'. ;-)Posted on 22 Mar 2010 09:53

new marketing? - [2010 trends] Core trends affecting marketers
I do agree that many companies are still 'product' and 'tech' led, rather than marketing led. I think where marketers are worth their title, they will be able to position the company as the marketing 'department' as we all know confining 'customer focus' to a department is a hangover from the traditional silo'd functions set up of companies. More and more companies will move to this philosophical way of treating marketing... as we all know it is far too important to leave to a 'department'!Posted on 21 Mar 2010 19:44

Toyota Knew - Toyota's recall saga is the start of a war
Toyota and others knew they were having issues and attempted to hide it. All Car Companies should have came forward with a full disclosures of what car were dangerous. Instead of waiting for a huge media blitz and tons of public pressure. I never seen so many car companies GM - NISSAN - TOYOTA - HYUNDAI having recalls all at the same time. I had no idea my car was affected until I looked on http://www.carpedalrecall.com and found I had a bad Anti Lock control unit on my 2008 Pontiac G8 , my co workers Ford Truck had a recall also. So be carefulPosted on 20 Mar 2010 20:27

Great, but to educate the 5%? - Get the most out of your freelance copywriter/editor
This is a great, practical article indeed. It's a pity that it seems to be directd at the industry, the poor FL who are at the receiving end of client ignorance and abuse and are already aware of the problem. The challenge is to get clients to understsnd that they cannot just expect copy work to be done for them free of charge. Many can simply not put value to the work done by freelancers! .Posted on 20 Mar 2010 11:04

SuperSport - ODM coming in May with 55 TV channels
@Thulani

SuperSport is a PRODUCT of MultiChoice. Why would they be anywhere else other than on the DStv platform?

@everyone else who complains about repeats. Get up to spead. This is how pay tv is worldwide. Everyone complains that SA is behind the times, and when we are with the times - there you are complaining again.Posted on 19 Mar 2010 21:44

Quoting is an art, not a science :) - Freelancers: here's how to get paid
Start off thumb-sucking mate. Also depends on what the client wants. Some say they want a quote per project, per hour etc. You'll quickly learn how to correctly quote properly, but it's still sometimes a hit and miss. Don't forget the art of getting a PROPER and ACCURATE brief though. Otherwise it's almost impossible to quote. Remember it's both your time AND SKILL that you're peddling.Posted on 19 Mar 2010 17:41
