South African printers and the print industry were recognised and honoured at the 2008 Sappi African Printers of the Year gala event on Thursday, 26 June 2008. Held in the Drakensberg, the event saw six gold winners being awarded the coveted printing awards, with Johannesburg based printer Ultra Litho again scooping multiple gold awards.
Judging by a panel of industry experts took place on the 10 and 11 March 2008, with finalists selected from 323 entries from five countries in the nine categories that included annual reports, books brochures, calendars, catalogues, general print, magazines, packaging and labels and printer's own promotion.
This year's competition highlighted the need for sustainability in the print industry and for the development of new talent.
The gold winners in the categories where print standards were adjudged world class included:
Annual reports category - Ultra Litho for Bidvest annual report printed on Enigma Polar White and Triple Green Print Silk.
Books category - Ultra Litho for Brian Joffee “My Book” printed on Magno Satin
Brochures category - Fishwicks Printers for Seaton Delaval printed on Magno Satin

The brochures, annual reports and magazines categories were especially strongly contested with the judges having a difficult task in selecting overall winners. The judging criteria included overall impact, technical excellence and degree of difficulty.

Representing the African region at the international awards is an honour and winners can stand proud in competing amongst the best of the best. The Sappi African Printers of the Year provides the local print industry with a platform to launch deserving winners into the global printing arena,” said the panel of judges.
